About Us
Future Operation of Rainbow Animal Rescue
UPDATE January 4th 2026: We are pretty much officially closed. The animals we have in our care now will stay with us until placed or become sanctuary pups.
We have given up our 501c status and are winding down to pretty much only be assisting other rescues when we have space to hold and transport for them.
It has been a long haul and we have finally aged out and some have developed medical issues and it is time to hang our hats up and try to enjoy what time
we have left. Since Rainbow Animal Rescue is no longer a tax exempt organization, donations made to us from this date are NOT tax-deductible.
We are stepping WAY back from rescue. All of our officers/family members are having some pretty major medical issues. We are all over 60 and the strain
mentally and physically over the years has finally started taking its toll on us. We will be gearing more toward posting and networking animals in need,
helping other rescues with temporary housing while they arrange transports, helping other rescues with transports etc. We will keep the ones we have like
Belle and Hound dog
Ronan. Thank you all for your years of support. For many years we
handled anywhere from 400 to 700 a year, it is time for us to slow way down. I do not think I will ever be completely
out of the animal rescue world until I die, but it is time to have some family time while I can still move lol.
Over the past 10 years, 6,207+ animals have come into rescue under our name. We had a 98% positive outcome. Our hearts broke as we lost some to parvo, to heartworm
disease, or other issues.
Change happens. We are older, slower, but we have not stopped. We cannot keep up the pace we have in the past.
We are still working with the public to network those in need with other rescue groups.
Foster homes will help us help other animals in need. Foster homes make a difference.
Who we areRainbow Animal Rescue is a no-kill rescue based in north-east North Carolina. We are a nonprofit animal rescue organization. We are not a business and do not employ anyone. We started our rescue over 20 years ago in an effort to help the many unwanted, abandoned and mistreated animals in Halifax County, North Carolina and the surrounding areas. We do not have an 'adoption center' where you can walk around and meet the dogs. We foster pets in our homes in the area around Roanoke Rapids until we can find loving 'forever' homes for them. If you would like to adopt a dog, you must first fill in the adoption application form. We rely on donations from the public to help us save the dogs and cats. Rainbow Rescue has been online since November 2nd 2003.
Donations of your time are always welcome. We are always looking for good foster homes (really need these), help with cleaning kennels, transports, fundraising, etc. Even a few hours a month can make a difference. If you think you would like to help out, please contact us. Cash donations are always gratefully accepted, too. We do not have a rich benefactor so we rely on donations to help the animals. See our donation page by clicking here. Note: your donations are NOT tax deductible. Thank you!
If you are interested in adopting a pet from our rescue, please fill out our Adoption Application Form. We do not ship pets, but can work with you to arrange transport.

Donate to help us help them
The dogs we rescue often require veterinary attention. We do not have a rich benefactor so we rely on small donations to help the animals.

Do not forget to bring your pets inside when it is too cold outside. IF IT IS TOO COLD FOR YOU, IT IS TOO COLD FOR THEM! The law says: During cold weather, a dog shelter must have a windbreak at its entrance and have bedding material that is sufficient to protect the animal from cold and promote the retention of body heat.
