What We DoRainbow Animal Rescue is a no-kill rescue based in North Carolina. We are a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) animal rescue organization (EIN 20-0241166). We are not a business and do not employ anyone. We started our rescue in an effort to help the many unwanted, abandoned and mistreated animals in Halifax County, North Carolina and the surrounding areas. We keep dogs at our adoption center operated by volunteers, and foster pets in our homes until we can find loving 'forever' homes for them. We rely on donations from the public to help us save the dogs and cats.
DONATIONS NEEDED FOR SICK AND INJURED DOGSOur largest monthly outlay is the vet bills. If your pet has had surgery you know how much that costs. We do not have a rich benefactor and the vets do not work for free. Jazzy the Chihuahua spent several days at Roanoke Animal Hospital being treated for pneumonia (see below), and we have had two dogs with amputations including Bri and a major mass removal surgery for Mellie (see the Facebook page) at the other vets. Also the pups with chemical burns along with the pup that had head injuries and the tests on the pups that have seizures. See the Facebook page for more information about these dogs. Any donation you can give is greatly appreciated.
On behalf of the dogs
NEWS OF JAZZY and MELLIEUPDATE: October 14th: Mellie had surgery about a week ago to remove a tumor and spay. We heard back and the tumor was benign - yay! Jazzy stopped in to say hello and cheer Mellie up. As you can see see on the Facebook page, Mellie is moving much better without the huge tumor and Jazzy has about recovered from her bout of pneumonia. They both enjoyed the visit on this nice day. Both medical needs were expensive, but well worth the outcome. If you can donate to help pay off their bills please do. UPDATE: September 28th: Jazzy still has some infection in her lung. Her breathing is improved and her blood work numbers are still low. She was happy when a young visitor stopped by with a new toy for her - click here to see the video. Thank you Dr. Andrea and staff at Roanoke Animal Hospital for her specialized care and locating the antibiotic necessary for her treatment. UPDATE: September 18th: Jazzy has started her new antibiotics. Her temperature is in normal range and she is eating some. We are hopeful right now. September 16th: Sweet Jazzy is back at Roanoke Animal Hospital being cared for by great people. Her fever started to spike again, and she stopped eating. She has been through so much. The result analysis of cultures from her lung wash came in today and she has an antibiotic resistant bacteria causing her pneumonia. Dr. Andrea has requested immediate shipment of best one of the three antibiotics that will treat this. If this does not work we may lose her. Please pray for this sweet girl.
LOST YOUR DOG?August 23rd: There are several dogs from Roanoke Rapids that were picked up as strays and taken to Animal Control. Some have collars others do not. If you are missing your dog, I highly recommend you go and check to see if your dog is there. Do not just call. Due to the number of animals that they see weekly they may not recognize your description of your dog. Get up and go to Halifax County Animal Control, 568 Dog Pound Rd, Halifax, NC 27839, and look for yourself. More dogs will die this week because the rescue does not have any room and owner surrenders and strays are still pouring into Animal Control. It is Halifax County policy that a stray animal is held at Animal Control for a minimum of one week. If the owner is not located, the pet is offered for adoption or put to sleep. Do not blame Animal Control. Blame the people that dump their dogs.
Why we need your helpAugust 1st: This very pregnant dog turned into animal control started having puppies. She is filthy, covered in huge ticks, fleas and is way underweight. Nothing we can do about that today, but she will get something tomorrow to help get rid of the blood suckers. If you would like to donate to help cover some of the upcoming expenses, please click here to see our donations page. Just a short week in review to explain why we are sometimes cranky or cannot stay on the phone long. First there was the puppy Animal Control was called to pick up because she had been attacked by a large dog, then within minutes they called to tell us one was being turned in because it was having seizures. Second, a mom with 9 pups needed rescue at a shelter we sometimes help. Of course we had no room but started networking the mom plus 9. A rescue was found in NY so she was pulled, taken to the vet and overnighted by a foster. Foster transported her to our driver who drove the mom and pups from Halifax NC all the way up into NY - those things take a lot of networking time! Then pulled a couple more dogs from Animal Control to fill spots of two that left. Then we had to take three to the Vet to be altered, and today taking a few to the Vet to get health certificates so that one of the drivers can drive them to DE tomorrow to make room for us to pull a few more. But then of course this morning the momma dog went into labor so we had to move some dogs around to make room for her to whelp. Last count was 10 puppies. So, yes it has been a busy week. All of this on top of just the regular cleaning and care. Also tagged two more at animal control to be pulled if the ones going for health certificates pass and can leave, AND THAT FOLKS IS AN AVERAGE WEEK FOR OUR LITTLE CREW. If you would like to volunteer please contact us.
Dog Walking SundayDog walking events take place on Sunday at Rainbow Animal Rescue, 54 Dog Pound Road, Halifax. We start at 11am, weather permitting. We do not walk the dogs if it is raining. Please try to arrive at 10:45 so that we can find a furbaby for you. Check the Facebook Page Sunday morning in case the dog walk is canceled at short notice.
Volunteer at Halifax Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, NCWe need people to help out at the Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, 54 Dog Pound Road, Halifax. Do you have 2 hours of free time one day a week? We need people to help out Monday through Friday and possibly weekends from 8:30 to 10:30 am. If interested please contact or 252-883-6413.
Not All Bleach is Disinfectant! If you are buying bleach for the rescue as disinfectant, please buy either plain Clorox or plain bleach that says cleaning bleach on the label. Many low splash, scented and generic bleaches do not disinfect like these two. Walmart sells cleaning bleach that runs between $2.50 and $3 per gallon. All bleach is not the same. Chlorine content can range from 2% to 6% and the lower content does not kill germs and bacteria.
Puppy Food and Old NewspapersWe have a lot of puppies at the rescue. We need canned and dry Pedigree and Purina puppy food for them. We use old newspapers for the floor of the puppy pens. If you have any, please drop them off at 54 Dogpound Rd, Halifax, NC 27839 or call 252.883.6413. If you would like to help us by donating dog/puppy/kitten food, you can drop it in our donation bin at Petsen$e or purchase and donate dog/puppy/kitten food at Petsen$e, 1251 Julian R. Allsbrook Highway, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870, or Tractor Supply 1350 Julian Allsbrook HWY, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870 - please make sure you mark it 'For Rainbow Animal Rescue', or you can bring dog food to our facility at 54 Dogpound Rd, Halifax, NC 27839 any morning or during our normal opening hours (see the top of the page).
Foster Homes Urgently RequiredWe rely on people to provide temporary homes to the dogs and cats we have rescued. The more foster homes we have, the more pets we can save from certain death at the county pound so we never have enough! It is heartbreaking when we have to leave perfectly nice dogs to their fate at the pound because we do have room for them all. We prefer our foster homes to be in Roanoke Rapids and Halifax area but we are open to offers. If you would like more information about fostering please e-mail or Click here to fill out our Foster Home Application form.
Adoption Application and FeesAn adoption application must be on file for each animal adopted. The application form can be found online - CLICK HERE. Our adoption fee is $175 covering all age appropriate vaccines, microchip, heartworm test (if old enough) deworm, and spay/neuter. It also includes heartworm treatment, or if adopter opts for slow kill it includes the doxycycline and 12 months of heartworm prevention. News of Lane
Who We AreRainbow Animal Rescue NC is a non profit 501(c)(3) organisation that rescues and finds homes for unwanted and homeless puppies, dogs, kittens and cats in North Carolina, USA. Having rescued the dogs, Rainbow Animal Rescue then provides medical treatment and tender loving care until they are healthy enough to find a new home. Rainbow Animal Rescue NC is a no-kill rescue that takes animals from county stray dog pounds, and homes that can no longer look after them. The dogs stay in foster homes around the Roanoke Rapids area or at our Animal Rescue and Adoption Center containing 19 indoor/outdoor kennels, a puppy room, and exercise yards, looked after by our volunteers. We provide medical care for the dogs and cats until we find them a suitable home or they can be placed with another rescue organisation that can find them a new home. We cannot place dogs that are ill so if the kennels are full of dogs requiring medical attention E.g. heartworm, we do not have the room to rescue dogs from the county pound. That is why we always need foster homes.
Our adoption area is North Carolina and Southern Virginia. We will not 'ship' a pet to you. We may be able to help you with transport. If you live out of our area, contact your local rescue and ask them whether they will take one of our dogs so that you can adopt it. Contact us if you live in DE, MD, NJ, NY or PA as there are rescues in those states that take our dogs.
We cannot provide you with veterinary care (free or otherwise)We do not have a vet on call or a vet on our staff. We do not have more access to a vet than the general public during the night or on weekends. We do not have unlimited volunteers or funding to get animals to emergency vetting services. Please understand this when calling or messaging us in the evenings and weekends. You as a pet owner have the same access to vet care that we do.
Volunteer at Halifax Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, NCWe need people to help out at the Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, 54 Dog Pound Road, Halifax. Do you have 2 hours of free time one day a week? If so, please consider donating that time to helping at our rescue center that has 19 indoor/outdoor kennels, a puppy room, and exercise yards. We need people to help out Monday through Friday and weekends from 8:30 to 10:30 am. If interested please contact or 252-883-6413.
Many hands make light work. We could not operate this facilty without the help of our wonderful volunteers.
On our Facebook page you will find photo's of rescued dogs and cats, news of events, requests for assistance, details of lost and found dogs and news of pets in their forever homes. This is a public page, you do not need to login to see it.

DonationsDonations of your time are always welcome especially in our new Animal Rescue and Adoption Center. We are always looking for good foster homes (we really need these), help with transports, fundraising, etc. Even a few hours a month can make a difference. If you think you would like to help out, please write or email. Cash donations are always gratefully accepted, too. Rainbow Animal Rescue now has a building to use for rescued dogs and with it running costs including an electricity bill, water bill, cleaning costs, maintenance costs and the food bill! As always, vet bills, from routine check-ups and vaccinations to treatment of injuries, heartworm, parvo, or malnutrition. Then there is getting them spayed or neutered.
